Kepong Forestry School

Introduction

Kepong Forestry School in Kepong is one of the oldest institutions in the Forestry Department Peninsular Malaysia. The objective of the school is to train the uniform staff of the department and the public so as to increase their knowledge and upgrade their skill in the field of forestry.


Location

The school is located at Bukit Lagong Forest Reserve in the state of Selangor Darul Ehsan, about 16km from Kuala Lumpur. The journey from Kuala Lumpur will normally take about 20 minutes and public transport services such as train, buses, and taxis are available.


The History Of Forestry School

The school had been established in 1926, and the first course was conducted in September, 1927 for 12 trainees from Federated Malay State, Johore, and Kedah. In 1934, Sabah started sending its trainees followed by Kelantan, and Terengganu in 1938. Since its establishment till now the school had trained a large number of experienced and skillful field foresters.

At the early stage of its establishment, the trainees were selected among the Department’s Forest Labourers. However, beginning on 1st April 1984 with the implementation of a new scheme of service for the Foresters and Forest Ranger, intake of trainees were open to the public beside the staffs of the department. In line with that, the Forestry School had amended its educational syllabus and entrance qualification, and it was implemented in 1986. After 10 years of its establishment, the school had developed a new curriculum and implemented in 1996 to suit the current needs.

  • Dendrology I & II.
  • Timber Identification I & II.
  • Basic Forest Mensuration.
  • Land Survey.
  • Government Administration and Forest Laws.
  • Workers Health and Safety.
  • Forest Inventory.
  • Basic Computer.
  • Field Work.

Co-Curiculum


Trainees are compulsory to attend the following co-curriculum;


  • Army Reserve Unit.
  • Jungle Survival.
  • Sports.
    Examination


    The following examination will be conducted for each semester;


    • Monthly tests.
    • Assessment of trainees performance in the field exercises.
    • Assessment in Core Subjects.
    • Assessment on other subjects.
    • Final Examination.

    Presentation Of Certificates


    Every trainee who has passed all the examination and field exercises will be awarded;

    • Forest Ranger Certificate.
    • Forester Certificate.

    Facilities Available For The Trainees


    To ensure well being of the trainees during their stay at the Forestry School, various facilities are provided as follows;


    a) Training


    • Trainee Hostel.
    • Lecture rooms equipped with audio - visual facilities.
    • Seminar Rooms.
    • Library.
    • Grand Hall.
    • Arboretum.
    • Parade Square.
    • Transportation.
    • Living allowance, uniform, books and traveling allowance to and pro from place of stay to the school.


    b) Social and Sports Facilities


    • Football Field.
    • Tennis, Badminton, Volleyball dan Sepak Takraw courts.
    • A Mosque.
    • Canteen and Training Mess.

    Career


    Holders of either certificates can find employment in;

    1. The Forestry Department or other agencies including the private sector.
    2. Forestry related industry or;
    3. Operate an independent business in forest development.
